VLC media player for Mac was initially the client for the VideoLAN project, which was aimed at creating software allowing the diffusion of videos through a computer network.

It was originally developed by the students of the Ecole Centrale Paris and was broadcast for the first time on 1st February 2001 under the GNU GPL license.
